With a heavy heart, we brought you the sad news of the impending death of one of Reykjavík’s only arthouse cinema, Bíó Paradís. The rent was to be doubled making it completely unsustainable.

But people have mobilized and signed a petition to save the beloved cultural landmark, and today they are holding a meeting at 18:00, at Bío Paradís, to collectively think about what can be done to stop the closing process.

The event welcomes everyone who doesn’t want to see the only downtown cinema closing. The Grapevine has awarded Bíó Paradís Best Cinema for multiple years considering it to be “a welcome oasis in that barren wasteland of American teen flicks that is the Icelandic cinema scene. We had long been hoping for an arthouse cinema in this country. That we got one as good as Bíó Paradís is something of an accident,” wrote our former editor-in-chief, Valur Gunnarsson.
